Jayson’s Cosmo Birthday (Feb)

Jayson wanted a BYU party with Cosmo (BYU’s cougar mascot). I told him that we could see Cosmo at the BYU games, but having Cosmo come to his birthday party probably wouldn’t happen (even with the BYU connections we sometimes get through Mark’s brother). Just a few days later, we were reminded that a family had Cosmo over for a party. I was sure that was because this family donated a kazillion dollars to BYU. Still, I called Cosmo’s office and sure enough, for a fair price, we could hire Cosmo to come out and make an appearance at Jayson’s party. When these kinds of exciting things happen, Jay says his usual, “this is the best day of my life”. The Cosmobile drove up and out jumped Cosmo ready to play. He played some basketball, did a little break dancing, and had an arm and thumb wrestling contest. He couldn’t talk and it was a little awkward because we usually see him from a distance. Jayson became really shy and wouldn’t participate in anything. This time with Cosmo was valuable and Cosmo was trying everything he could to give Jayson attention. Finally, I took Jayson aside and asked what he wanted Cosmo to do. His reply was “I just want to play the Wii with Cosmo”. There was only about 5 minutes left before Cosmo had to leave. Cosmo and Jay played Wii dodgeball and that ended up being the highland for Jayson. That night he said he was going to have ‘night-mirrors’. Trying not to brush him off because he wanted to sleep in my bed, I really listened to his concerns. He said he couldn’t close his eyes because then he would see Cosmo’s eyes…”It wasn’t really Cosmo…I could see his eyes and they were sharp and pointy (eyelashes??) and really red. It scared me”. So we had the talk about how Cosmo wasn’t real…I could have sworn that we already talked about this. Maybe that was the Easter bunny. Jayson slept fine that night. Overall, he loved his party with Cosmo.
